EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There come moments when you are caught with no way out, when every choice seems to close around you. In that narrowness, notice where you are tempted to place your trust. The mind wants to throw itself on the judgment of people, on their approval and their verdicts, which are as fearful and unforgiving as the mind that seeks them.

There is another way to fall. You can surrender instead into life itself, into the deeper intelligence that holds this moment. It does not condemn you the way the human mind does. When you yield to what is rather than to the fear of what others will do, you meet a mercy the anxious ego can never offer, and something in you finally rests.

  1. When you are stuck with no good option, stop rehearsing what people will say and let yourself feel the floor under you for a moment. The fear is mostly about the audience, not the situation.
  2. Next time you want a group chat to tell you that you did the right thing, hold off on posting. Sit with the not-knowing, then talk to one person you actually trust.
  3. Before a hard meeting or a review, let go of needing to come out looking good. Say what is true and let the room be what it is. Something in you relaxes the instant you stop defending your image.

Whose verdict are you still waiting for before you will let yourself rest?

Water does not fight the ground it falls on, and it reaches everywhere. Yielding to the shape of things is strength, not defeat.

Stoicism · Epictetus

What other people think of you is not yours and never was. Hand your weight to what is actually holding you, not to the verdicts of a crowd.

Sufism · tawakkul

Trust is letting yourself rest in what is larger than your fear. The anxious heart asks the whole world for reassurance and gets none.
