CYBERNETICS
The prayer reaches for the deepest workshop in a person, the place where pictures form before any hand moves. What a heart imagines day after day settles into the self-image, and the self-image steers the whole life without being asked. The old king wanted the good picture fixed there for good, not left to fade by morning. Such a wish reaches deep.
A person prepares his own heart the way a gardener prepares soil, by choosing what he plants and returns to. A picture of belonging held long enough stops being a wish and becomes the ground the rest of him grows from. Kept forever, as the prayer asks, it quietly makes the man.

SUFISM
Niyya: Intention Niyya names the aim a person carries into an act, the wanting underneath the doing. A surge of wholehearted willingness feels permanent while it lasts, and anyone who has felt one knows how fast it drains away. Asking that the wanting be kept, rather than asking for more good deeds, treats the aim as the part everything else grows out of.
Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity Ikhlāṣ means the aim points at God alone. Ibn Ata Allah wrote that deeds are shapes standing upright and sincerity is the spirit inside them, without which the shape is empty. After a generous moment other motives slip in quietly: the credit, the reputation, the pleasure of thinking well of yourself. Wanting the aim kept clean is wanting the good done to stay God's rather than slowly become about oneself.
Khawāṭir: The thoughts that arrive in the heart on their own Khawāṭir are the impulses and thoughts that show up in a person unasked. Al-Ghazali watched how they come and go, and saw that nobody schedules them. A wholehearted impulse arrives that same way, unannounced, and the next week a different set of thoughts fills the same space. Hoping this one stays is asking for something a person cannot arrange from the inside.
O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm on your path: the heart shifts by itself The Prophet repeated this prayer often, asking that his own heart be held steady. Anyone who has meant something completely one month and felt flat about it the next knows the trouble. Steadiness gets asked for as a gift because the heart moves on its own, and no amount of deciding holds it still.
Tawfīq: God's enabling of the good a person does Tawfīq names the help without which a good act never gets off the ground. Asking for a heart to be made ready hands the whole thing back, including the willingness that already showed up. Once the first impulse looks like a gift, wanting more of it turns into asking rather than straining.
Cybernetics lens
What picture of yourself have you been watering without meaning to?
What you are follows from what you have thought. The mind goes first and the life comes along behind it.
Practice is not preparation for awakening but the thing itself, done again today and tomorrow. The repeating is the whole of it.
A person is made of desire: as the desire, so the resolve, and as the resolve, so the deed. What you dwell on is quietly deciding what you become.
