A thousand bullocks burned to nothing is a staggering thing to give away, and that extravagance is exactly the point. Give up what you value most. Place it on the altar and let it go, because holding everything back is how a person turns rigid and dies inside. The wealth given up here marks a whole people orienting themselves toward something above their appetite.

Sacrifice is the oldest discovery of our kind: give up something now, and the future opens. A father who works a job he dislikes so his children can eat is doing precisely this. To surrender part of what one has, in trust, is how a person buys tomorrow.

Live 1 Chronicles 29:21 today

  1. Give away something today that you would rather keep, money you had plans for, the last hour of your evening, the thing in the closet you have been saving for nothing. Do it without telling anyone.
  2. Hand someone the credit you wanted. In the meeting, the group chat, the family story, say the other person's name where you would normally have said your own.
  3. When you feel yourself clamping down, counting what you are owed, tallying who did less, let one of those claims go on purpose. You are buying something with it, even if you cannot see what yet.

What am I holding so tightly that it has started to make me rigid?
