1 Corinthians 10:17 Meaning Because There Is One Loaf of Bread

Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.

What does 1 Corinthians 10:17 mean?

One loaf feeds many, and the many become one. The heart that insists on standing apart, better fed than the rest, is sick with the pride that measures itself against neighbors.

SUFISM

Sufism

One loaf feeds many, and the many become one. The heart that insists on standing apart, better fed than the rest, is sick with the pride that measures itself against neighbors. The plain cure is to sit and eat from the same table without counting portions.

God is present in the sharing itself. A single spring runs out into many streams, yet the water is one water wherever a person kneels to drink. What looks like a crowd of separate mouths is one life being tasted in many places at once.

Live 1 Corinthians 10:17 today

  1. Eat one meal today without your phone and without reading anything. Just the food, and whoever is there.
  2. At dinner or lunch with someone, hand them the better portion without mentioning it. Let the counting stop with you.
  3. In the grocery line or on the crowded train, pick one stranger and remind yourself that the same life is running through them as through you. It will change your face before it changes your thinking.

Who have you been quietly measuring yourself against, and what would it cost to just sit and eat with them?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · Dogen, Instructions for the Cook

He wrote that cooking and serving the community's one pot of rice is itself the whole of practice, done with the same care as sitting. The shared meal is not the setting for the training, it is the training.

Upanishads

As one fire enters a house and takes the shape of every room it warms, one life enters many bodies and is still one life. The crowd you are looking at is that.

Confucius · Analects 13

The person of character is in harmony with others without needing to be the same as them, while the small person conforms outwardly and is never in harmony. Unity is not everyone matching, and it is not anyone ranking.
