BUDDHISM
Taṇhā: Craving Craving is the thirst that keeps reaching for the next thing. Fed every morning with bread that fell from the sky, they still tasted Egypt in memory and wanted meat, and thirst always works that way: whatever is in the hand goes flat the moment the mind pictures something better. The evil sits less in the quail itself than in the reaching for it, which is why the warning carries so easily from a desert camp to a dinner table in Corinth.
Vipāka: The ripening of deeds Deeds ripen in their own time, the way fruit ripens on a tree. The camp where they gorged themselves got the name Graves of Craving, and that is what wanting looks like once it has come to term: a patch of desert with markers standing in it. Those graves are set in front of the Corinthians because the same seed is in their own hands whenever they take a seat at the idol's feast.
Ādīnava: The drawback Ādīnava is the hook inside the bait. Holding up a whole generation's collapse puts the sequence in a single frame: the meat they asked for, and the sickness that arrived while it was still between their teeth. Looking long at the second half is what loosens the pull of the first, and that is the work an example is meant to do.
Saṃvega: Urgency Saṃvega is the jolt that turns something known into something done. Their story is written down to land the way a wreck on the shoulder of the highway lands: you ease off the gas and hold the wheel differently for the next hour. It reaches the nerves before it reaches the argument, which is how it keeps anyone out of a repeat.
Appamāda: Heedfulness Heedfulness is steady care about where the mind is drifting. The point of setting these examples down arrives in the ordinary hour afterward, since craving rarely announces itself as craving; it shows up as a reasonable preference for something better than what is on the plate. For people living beside temples that hand out free meat, the watching has to happen at the table, not in the retelling.
Buddhism lens
What are you reaching for right now, and what would it actually be like to have it?
When something attractive catches you, do not get carried off with it. Wait a beat and picture how you will feel after, not only during.
Too many colors blind the eye, too many flavors deaden the tongue. The chase itself is what leaves a person unsettled.
Dwell on a thing and attachment grows, then wanting, then anger when it is blocked. It all starts with where the mind keeps going.
