Niyya: Intention A saying of the Prophet has it that actions are counted by what a person aimed at. Eagerness for something spiritual often starts as wanting God and slides into wanting the standing it brings, though both feel the same from inside. The same effort becomes a different thing depending on who it is for.

Riyāʾ: Showing off in worship Al-Ghazali treats the wish to be seen as holy as the quietest danger in a religious life. The pull gets strong when a gift is visible, because praise arrives fast and feels like proof that God is pleased. A person can work hard, look devoted, and end up with nothing built but their own name.

Ṣaḥw: Sobriety Junayd held that the one who comes back clear-headed stands higher than the one swept away. Being overwhelmed feels like the summit, so the state itself becomes the thing chased, and the point of it drops out of view. Sobriety means returning able to say something plain enough that another person can use it.

The best of people are those most useful to people: usefulness is the measure Sufis repeat this line as the plain test of a life. Someone who ranks their progress by the height of their experiences never settles anything, because those feelings shift from week to week. Whether another person was helped is a question with an answer, and it points a person straight at whoever is in front of them.

Ṣuḥba: Keeping company Sufi teachers treated shared life with others as the main place a person grows. Alone, someone can hold a high opinion of their own progress for years with nothing to test it. Around others, patience and honesty get checked daily, and a gift either helps the group or just decorates one person. The group growing steadier is the sign that something is going right.

Live 1 Corinthians 14:12 today

  1. After anything that moves you today, a song, a walk, a quiet ten minutes, ask what it leaves you able to do for someone. Then go do that small thing.
  2. Explain something you care about to one person in words they can actually use, with no special vocabulary. If it only sounds deep, it is not ready.
  3. When a group is dragging, be the one who makes it easier for everyone else rather than the one who shows how far along they are.

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

He said the measure of learning is whether it changed how you treat people, not how much you can recite. Study that leaves your conduct untouched has not landed.

Buddhism · Bodhisattva vow

The aim is not to arrive alone but to be useful to everyone still on the way. Progress is counted by who you can help, not by what you have felt.

Zen

The tradition is blunt that after the great experience, you still chop wood and carry water. Coming back down and being ordinary is the actual sign of it.
