1 Corinthians 14:28 Meaning But If There Is No Interpreter

But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself, and to God.

What does 1 Corinthians 14:28 mean?

Some speech reaches no one. When words pour out in a form no listener can turn into meaning, they add nothing to the room, only sound, the mind emptying itself aloud.

Ego v. Being

Some speech reaches no one. When words pour out in a form no listener can turn into meaning, they add nothing to the room, only sound, the mind emptying itself aloud. And so a person falls quiet. That quiet holds no defeat. The noise is settling, and the push to be heard loosens its grip.

What stays when the outward speaking stops is the speaking that ran deeper all along. He speaks to himself, and to God, which is to say he meets the stillness beneath his own thinking. No one needs to translate that. There, in the silence, a person touches the ground of who he is and finds it was never far away.

  1. When you catch yourself drafting the perfect reply in your head on the walk home, let it go unsaid for one block and just walk. Feel how the pressure to explain yourself drains out, and how you are still completely here without it.
  2. In the next conversation where you are not getting through, stop pushing. Let there be a few seconds of quiet instead of one more attempt, and let the other person find their own way back in.
  3. In a meeting or a group chat going in circles, write the message, then don't send it. Sit with the small sting of not being heard and see what is underneath it.

What would you be if you stopped needing to be understood?

The one who knows does not keep talking, and the one who keeps talking does not know. Words spent on an ear that cannot receive them are wind.
