Believers who already know the good news get it handed to them again, because carrying a message and standing on it are not the same. The word behind gospel named a herald's announcement of something already finished.

Receiving here means taking over a message intact, the way a courier hands on a dispatch without rewriting a line. Their standing before God rests on that announcement, taken on trust, and nothing they add improves it. Longer believing does not put anyone on firmer ground than the day the announcement first reached them.

Live 1 Corinthians 15:1 today

  1. Write down, in one plain sentence, the thing you actually rest on when the day goes badly. Keep it somewhere you will see it on an ordinary Tuesday, not just a hard one.
  2. Tell someone close to you the simple version of what you believe, with no qualifiers and no clever framing. Saying it out loud to a real face tends to show you whether you are standing on it.
  3. Next time you feel behind, like other people are further along, go back to the plainest thing you know to be true instead of reaching for something more advanced. Longer practice does not get you a better foundation, just a more familiar one.

Have I quietly swapped the thing I stand on for the feeling of making progress?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Students are handed the same basic practice for decades, not newer practices, because the point was never to accumulate instructions. Years of sitting do not replace the first instruction, they settle a person into it.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot 1:1

The teaching was received and handed on, passed from one generation to the next without anyone claiming it as their own invention. What you carry faithfully matters more than what you add.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not be pleased with yourself for explaining a teaching beautifully. The question is whether you are standing on it when the ground moves.
