Ego v. Being

To awaken is not a moral command you must strain to obey. It is a shift in consciousness. Most of what human beings call wrongdoing flows from a single source, and that source is unconsciousness, the state of being so lost in thought and reaction that you do not see what you are doing.

Sin, in its oldest meaning, is simply to miss the mark, to act while absent from yourself. When you awaken into presence and act from that clear awareness, the compulsion to harm loses its ground. You sin less not by trying harder to be good but by becoming conscious, because harmful action only arises when awareness is absent, and presence fills that absence.

Live 1 Corinthians 15:34 today

  1. For one hour, do one thing at a time and know you are doing it. The dishes, the walk, the email, with the other screens closed.
  2. Before you answer a message that irritated you, wait until you can feel your own breathing. Then write from there instead of from the sting.
  3. When you catch yourself snapping at someone, stop mid sentence and come back. You do not need a speech, just presence in the room again.

Where today did you hurt someone while your mind was somewhere else?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Harm comes from a mind that is not watching itself. Guard awareness and the wrongdoing has nowhere to begin.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

People do wrong because they are asleep to what they are doing. Awake, you see clearly, and seeing clearly you act differently.

Zen

The practice is simply this: when you walk, know you are walking. Most of our damage is done while we are somewhere else.
