1 Corinthians 15:42 Meaning So Also Is the Resurrection

So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown perishable; it is raised imperishable.

What does 1 Corinthians 15:42 mean?

Rising from the dead is a change of state happening within one person, not the reviving of a buried corpse. What is sown in corruption is the ordinary self planted in the perishable body, subject to decay and death, the lower nature that rots because it is made of the flesh alone.

Rising from the dead is a change of state happening within one person, not the reviving of a buried corpse. What is sown in corruption is the ordinary self planted in the perishable body, subject to decay and death, the lower nature that rots because it is made of the flesh alone. What is raised in incorruption is the same self lifted into the deathless awareness, no longer bound to the breaking-down of matter. The one seed becomes 2 conditions, and the whole movement is the passage from a mind rooted in the mortal to a mind rooted in the undying, worked out inside the living.

Resurrection is a person carried from the perishable state of consciousness into one that no longer decays.

Live 1 Corinthians 15:42 today

  1. Clean out one small thing today, a drawer, a photo roll, an old grudge in your notes app. Letting go of the perishable version makes room for whatever comes next.
  2. Tell someone close to you one thing you have changed your mind about. The old opinion is allowed to die, and you are allowed to be the one who outlives it.
  3. When something ends badly today, a project, a plan, a conversation, let it be fully over before you reach for the lesson. Things have to go into the ground before they come up changed.

What part of your life is finished, and are you still watering it?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · impermanence

Everything made of parts comes apart, and seeing that clearly is not grim, it loosens the grip. What stops decaying is the clinging, not the world.

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

He spoke of the body as a form the great process happens to borrow for a while. Grieving that it changes is like grieving that water flows.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 2

Worn clothes are set aside and new ones put on. The self that wears them is not what gets worn out.
