1 Corinthians 2:10 Meaning But to Us

But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The deepest truths of life are not reached by thinking. The mind, for all its cleverness, can only rearrange what it already knows, moving along the surface of things. What is deep is revealed in another way entirely, through the still awareness in you that perceives without needing to analyze.

When the noise of thought subsides, a quieter intelligence comes forward, and it knows directly, from within, what no amount of reasoning could uncover. This is the Spirit searching the deep things: not the mind straining after answers, but the presence in you recognizing reality the moment you are still enough to let it through.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

There is something in the mind that reaches down into its own depths, into regions the everyday self never visits. It is not the reasoning intellect, which works only with what is already in the light. It is a deeper searching faculty that moves through the dark and brings back what it finds.

The deep things spoken of here are the oldest and most powerful contents of the inner world, the layer where the image of God is rooted. They cannot be reached by clever argument from outside. They make themselves known from within, rising into awareness on their own, the way a spring rises through the earth. That is why real conviction about such matters comes as an inner experience rather than a conclusion someone talks you into.

SUFISM

Sufism

Al-Bāṭin: The Inner Among the names Muslims give God is the Inner, meaning that whatever shows on the surface has more standing behind it. Hearing that God has depths, a person can assume those depths are sealed off and none of their business. The name puts that hidden side inside God's own giving, as something He opens to people.

Kashf: Unveiling Unveiling is the Sufi word for a covering lifting off the heart so that something is simply seen. The lifting happens on the person's side, since God was never the one in hiding. Someone worn out from trying to think their way to God finds that the seeing arrives on its own, at an unchosen moment.

ʿIlm ladunnī: Knowledge from God's own presence Knowledge from God's presence is the Sufi phrase, taken from the Quran's account of a servant whom God taught from Himself. Nobody builds it up out of study, and no teacher hands it across. A person can sit with a truth for years and get nowhere, then know it whole, with no step they can point back to.

Sirr: The secret, the deepest point in the heart The secret is the Sufi name for the deepest point in a person, further in than thought or feeling reach. Ordinary understanding stops short of it, which is why someone can agree with a statement about God and feel nothing move. Whatever God gives lands at that point, and the person knows it there without being able to say how.

Dhawq: Tasting Tasting was al-Ghazali's word for knowing something by having it yourself. He compared it to the gap between knowing the definition of drunkenness and being drunk. Two people can hear the same words about God, and one comes away informed while the other comes away changed. That change came from meeting the thing itself, not from a better explanation.

Live 1 Corinthians 2:10 today

  1. When you are circling a problem in your head today, stop thinking about it on purpose. Walk, shower, stare out the window, and let the answer come from somewhere other than the grinding.
  2. The next time someone tells you something hard, resist analyzing it while they talk. Listen with no commentary running and see what you understand that you would have missed.
  3. In traffic or a line or a slow elevator, do not reach for the phone. Let the empty minute be empty and see what surfaces when the noise drops.

What do you already know that you have been trying to think your way to?

Tao Te Ching 47

You do not have to travel to understand. Sit still, let the dust settle, and things become clear on their own.

Zen

A muddy pool clears when you stop stirring it, not when you work harder at it. The clarity was never something you had to manufacture.
