1 Corinthians 2:12 Meaning But We Received Not the Spirit
But we received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:12 · World English Bible
But we received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God.
There are two ways of perceiving what you are. One belongs to the world, and it counts everything as something to be earned, bargained for, or defended.

The same verse, read by 2 traditions.

EGO & BEING
There are two ways of perceiving what you are. One belongs to the world, and it counts everything as something to be earned, bargained for, or defended. It never rests, because it senses that whatever it gains can be lost.
The other is simple awareness itself, the still presence you are beneath your thoughts. When you awaken to it, you begin to notice all that was already given and needs no earning. This breath. This aliveness. The awareness in which everything appears. These were never bought or deserved. They were here from the beginning, waiting only to be noticed.

SUFISM
Ḥubb al-dunyā: Love of the world Al-Ghazali uses this for the heart's attachment to what passes. A person running on that attachment reads every situation for what it costs and what it pays back. Gifts start looking like transactions, and anything that cannot be bought or bargained for goes unnoticed. So someone can be surrounded by things handed over for nothing and still see only prices.
Rūḥ: The spirit breathed in from God The Quran describes God breathing His own spirit into the human being. So the part of a person able to recognize God was handed over rather than earned. Understanding that changes how insight feels: less like being clever, more like being given something.
ʿIlm ladunnī: Knowledge that comes straight from God's presence Al-Ghazali uses this phrase for understanding that no one taught you. Most of what people know arrived through someone, a teacher, a book, an argument they lost. Then certain things settle in the heart without any of that, and a person cannot say where they picked it up. Recognizing what has been given to you tends to come that way, since nobody can hand you that recognition secondhand.
Dhawq: Tasting Al-Ghazali compares this to knowing honey by eating it. A person can hold every fact about what they have received and still feel that nothing was received. Tasting closes that gap, and a generosity that had only been an idea becomes something they have met.
Shukr: Gratitude Al-Ghazali says gratitude begins with seeing both the blessing and the one who gave it. Good things arrive all the time and get quietly filed under luck, timing, or hard work, and the day moves on. When a person catches the giver behind them, the same ordinary day fills up with things handed over for free.
Ego v. Being lens
How much of what matters most to you today did you have to pay for?
The one who knows what is enough is already rich. Chase more and you will always be a little behind.
Do not grieve for what you lack. Count instead the things you have that you never arranged for, and see how much was simply handed to you.
The moon and the breeze cost nothing and belong to no one. Those who feel poor are just not looking at what is already here.
