1 Corinthians 3:4 Meaning For When One Says

For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you fleshly?

What does 1 Corinthians 3:4 mean?

Quickly the mind completes I am with a label. I am of this teacher, I am of that group, one side set against another.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Quickly the mind completes I am with a label. I am of this teacher, I am of that group, one side set against another. Each time, a fragile self is built out of an affiliation, and it must then defend itself against all the other selves built the same way. This is the ego, dividing the world into camps so that it can feel like something.

The conflict this breeds is not a sign of depth but of unconsciousness. The awareness that says I am, before any label is added, belongs to everyone equally and takes no side. When you notice yourself reaching for one of these badges of identity, you can pause. In that pause you step out of the quarrel, because you no longer need a label to know that you are.

Live 1 Corinthians 3:4 today

  1. Say "I am" today without finishing the sentence. No job, no side, no role, just the bare fact of being here, and see how steady that is without the add-ons.
  2. When someone sorts you into a category you did not choose, let it pass without correcting them. You do not need them to file you properly in order to know who you are.
  3. In an argument today, catch the moment you stop listening and start defending the badge. Pause there, breathe once, and ask yourself if you want to be right or you want to understand.

Which label would be hardest for you to set down, and what does that tell you?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

This is right, that is wrong, and both sides are sure. Step back far enough and the whole argument looks like monkeys quarreling over the same tree.

Buddhism · Sutta Nipata

The one who clings to "my view" is already in a dispute. Hold no position and there is nothing for the quarrel to grip.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

We share one nature and one brief stretch of time. To work against each other over which camp we belong to is to work against ourselves.
