1 Corinthians 6:19 Meaning Or Don’t You Know That Your Body

Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

What does 1 Corinthians 6:19 mean?

The temple was never a building of stone; it is the flesh a person walks around in. Every column and courtyard of the old sanctuary maps a part of the body, and the innermost chamber is the seat of consciousness where the divine breath already lives.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The temple was never a building of stone; it is the flesh a person walks around in. Every column and courtyard of the old sanctuary maps a part of the body, and the innermost chamber is the seat of consciousness where the divine breath already lives. The Holy Ghost is that breath, the animating spirit moving in the lungs and the spine.

The body belongs to the life that fills it, not to the small self that thinks it owns the house. What religion sends a person to seek in a far shrine is standing inside the ribs the whole time, the sacred housed in ordinary flesh.

Temple: the physical body as the true sanctuary, its chambers mapping the organs and the seat of consciousness within Holy Ghost: the animating breath and spirit moving in the lungs and along the spine

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A man treats his body the way he privately rates it. Called a temple, housing the Holy Ghost, given by God, it stops being a thing to neglect or despise. The self-image lifts, and care follows the raised estimate.

And he is not his own. That single fact drains off the frantic ownership that drives so much self-abuse. Held in trust, valued by its Maker, a life gets tended instead of punished.

SUFISM

Sufism

A person can treat the body as private property, spending it however the appetites demand, forgetting who lives inside. The fault is that low ownership, the assumption that these hands and this hunger answer to no one. The cure is reverent care, keeping the house clean as a place of worship is kept clean, honoring a guest that was given, not earned.

The body is a dwelling where the Hidden One shows Himself, lent rather than bought. To be not one's own is no loss but a homecoming: the treasure was always the owner's, and the walls exist to hold His light.

Live 1 Corinthians 6:19 today

  1. Three times today, wherever you are, take one slow breath all the way down and feel it along your back. You are not borrowing the breath. It was given to you, and it is not really yours.
  2. When you hug someone or shake a hand, let yourself feel that you are touching a living temple, not a body in your way. It makes ordinary contact careful and warm.
  3. When stress has you shallow-breathing through emails, stop and take five full breaths before replying. Treat your own body as something you are keeping, not something you are using up.

How would I treat this body today if I knew I did not own it?

The same truth in other traditions

Hatha yoga · Hindu teaching

The breath is treated as the carrier of the life force, and working with it is the nearest a person comes to handling the sacred directly. The shrine is the body, and the breath is what moves in it.

Sufism · dhikr

The practice sets the remembrance of God on the breath itself, in and out, so the body becomes the place where the divine name lives. Nothing external is required.

Zen

The whole practice fits inside sitting still and following the breath. What you are seeking is already breathing you.
