1 Corinthians 8:6 Meaning Yet to Us There Is One God

yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we live through him.

What does 1 Corinthians 8:6 mean?

Everything that exists is water poured from a single source, taking the shape and color of whatever cup receives it, yet never becoming a second sea. The quiet idolatry this exposes is crediting the cup: loving the gift, the giver's name, one's own role, as if any of it stood alone.

Sufism

Everything that exists is water poured from a single source, taking the shape and color of whatever cup receives it, yet never becoming a second sea. The quiet idolatry this exposes is crediting the cup: loving the gift, the giver's name, one's own role, as if any of it stood alone.

The cure is to trace each good thing up the stream and hand the thanks there. What looks like many things flowing and many lives held up is one giving, seen from where the pouring starts and where it lands.

Live 1 Corinthians 8:6 today

  1. The next time something good lands today, a decent coffee, a text that made you laugh, a problem that solved itself, pause one breath and trace it past the person or thing it came through, up to God. Then say thanks there.
  2. When you thank someone today, say what came through them rather than only praising them. "That helped me more than you know" keeps them a window instead of making them the whole view.
  3. In a moment of pressure, a deadline, a tense call, remind yourself that the ability you are using was handed to you this morning and is not yours to defend. It loosens the grip without loosening the work.

Which gift have you been crediting to the cup instead of the source?

Tao Te Ching 34

The Tao flows out into everything and claims none of it. Each thing takes its shape from the one flow, and the flow never announces itself.

Upanishads

The many are one appearing as many, the way clay takes a hundred shapes and is still clay. What you are tracing back through every good thing is the same single ground.

He kept reminding himself that all things are woven together from one source, and that the part cannot be loved apart from the whole it came out of.
