1 Corinthians 8:8 Meaning But Food Will Not Commend Us

But food will not commend us to God. For neither, if we don’t eat, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.

What does 1 Corinthians 8:8 mean?

Nearness to the Father is never gained or lost at the table. Meat stands for every outer rule of diet and conduct a person hopes will earn him standing, and the plain word here is that eating or abstaining changes nothing about what he is inwardly.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Nearness to the Father is never gained or lost at the table. Meat stands for every outer rule of diet and conduct a person hopes will earn him standing, and the plain word here is that eating or abstaining changes nothing about what he is inwardly. The power that shapes a life lives in consciousness, in what a person assumes himself to be, and no food touches that.

What commends a person is his ability to move from one state of mind to another, to leave the man he was and occupy the man he wants to be. The body is a garment worn for a while, mastered rather than fought, and its habits neither raise nor lower him before God. A person is what he is conscious of being. That inner assumption, not the plate before him, is where he stands or falls.

  1. Drop one small rule you keep mostly to feel good about yourself, and see whether anything real changes. What you are inside is where the weight actually sits.
  2. When a friend tells you about their diet, their streak, or their routine, hold back the comparison and ask instead how they are doing on the inside. Let that be the real conversation.
  3. On a day you have slipped from your own standards, skip the guilt and simply step into the person you want to be from here. Carry that person through the next meeting or errand.

Am I measuring myself by what I do or by who I am being?

Not matted hair, not fasting, not sleeping on the ground makes a person pure. What purifies is the state of the heart.
