1 Corinthians 9:19 Meaning For Though I Was Free From All

For though I was free from all, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more.

What does 1 Corinthians 9:19 mean?

True freedom is not the ego's freedom to do as it pleases and answer to no one. That is only another form of bondage, the small self defending its borders.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

True freedom is not the ego's freedom to do as it pleases and answer to no one. That is only another form of bondage, the small self defending its borders. Real freedom is inner, a release from the compulsive need to protect and promote yourself.

And here is what surprises the mind. When you are free in this way, serving others no longer feels like a loss. You can give yourself completely because there is no fragile self left to guard. What you gain is not power over people but a deeper communion with them, for in laying down your separateness you discover the one life you were part of all along.

Live 1 Corinthians 9:19 today

  1. Do one small thing today that nobody will know you did. Rinse the cup someone left, refill the paper in the printer, carry the bag in from the car, and let it pass without a mention in the group chat.
  2. In your next conversation, give the other person the whole of your attention for its full length. Phone face down, no half an eye on the screen, no rehearsing your reply while they are still talking.
  3. When someone takes a shot at you in a meeting or on email, feel the urge to defend yourself and let it sit there a moment without acting on it. Then answer the actual question they asked, not the threat you felt.

What would you do differently today if you had nothing left to protect?

Water takes the lowest place and serves everything it touches, and that is exactly why nothing can overcome it. Yielding is not weakness, it is the one position that cannot be attacked.

Act fully, give your whole effort, and release your grip on what you get out of it. The person with nothing to protect in the outcome is the only one who is actually free while working.
