1 Corinthians 9:24 Meaning Don’t You Know That Those Who Run

Don’t you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win.

What does 1 Corinthians 9:24 mean?

Effort is the cheapest thing in the race; what separates people is whether losing was ever an option. Two runners can put in identical miles and finish in different lives, because miles are not what is being measured.

Effort is the cheapest thing in the race; what separates people is whether losing was ever an option.

Two runners can put in identical miles and finish in different lives, because miles are not what is being measured. A preference permits a slower pace on the day the legs burn, and that permission sets the state, the state sets what gets attempted, and attempts compound into an outcome. A must removes the permission before the day arrives, and the method and the discipline follow it in.

Most people enter and never decide to obtain, which is how someone trains for decades and ends with nothing that lasts. The crown in view does not spoil, and a standard set that high cannot survive as a should, because a should gets renegotiated the first season the body complains. Running without deciding to win costs a person the hours as well as the prize.

Live 1 Corinthians 9:24 today

  1. Take the thing you have been doing steadily without ever deciding to finish, and write down what finishing actually looks like. A direction is not a destination.
  2. Tell one friend the specific result you are going for, not the activity. Saying "I run most mornings" and saying "I am running this race in May" put two different people in your shoes.
  3. When today gets hard and you reach for the version where you did your best under the circumstances, do the full thing instead. The permission to go lighter is what decides the finish, and it is handed out long before the hard part.

Where have you been putting in the miles without ever deciding to arrive?

Bhagavad Gita 2

Krishna tells Arjuna to act without clinging to the fruit, yet to act fully. The release is in the outcome, never in the effort.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus said that if you want to win at the Olympics you must accept the diet, the drills, the heat, the cold, no wine when you want it. You cannot want the crown and keep the option of a lighter day.

Zen · Dogen

Dogen taught practice with the whole body and mind, not practice while holding something back for later. A reservation kept inside the effort is already the ceiling.
