My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.

Two truths are held together here without letting go of either. The goal is real: aim not to sin, take holiness seriously, do not shrug at what wounds your soul.

CATHOLIC
Two truths are held together here without letting go of either. The goal is real: aim not to sin, take holiness seriously, do not shrug at what wounds your soul. Yet the tenderness is real too, because when you do fall, you are not thrown out. An advocate is like a defense lawyer who stands up for you before the judge, and Christ himself takes that place at the Father's side.
This is why a Catholic can be honest about sin without despair. You fight it, and when you lose a round you go to the One who pleads your case, often through confession, where his mercy meets you by name. The door back is always open, because your defender never leaves the room.

ORTHODOX
The goal is a life with no sin in it. Mercy afterward is the safety net and never the plan, since aiming lower quietly produces people who sin comfortably.
An advocate is someone called to stand beside you in court and speak for you, and Christ does this as one of us, in a human nature he still carries. The defense is a man present before the Father with the wounds on him. And the Father is not being talked round by a kinder Son; he sent him, and the rescue is one will shared by all three.

Who speaks to you more harshly, you or anyone who actually loves you?
When you slip, come back to yourself at once and do not stay angry about the slip. The returning matters more than the record of how often you had to return.
In sitting practice the mind wanders a thousand times, and a thousand times you bring it back gently, without scolding. The scolding is a second distraction, not a cure.
What is rigid snaps, what stays soft endures. The living branch bends and so it is still there in the morning.
