1 John 2:14 Meaning I Have Written to You

I have written to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

What does 1 John 2:14 mean?

To know the one who is from the beginning is to know that in you which was never born and does not age, the formless awareness present before every thought and every experience. This is the true source of strength, not the willpower of the ego but the quiet power of Being that abides in you.

Ego v. Being

To know the one who is from the beginning is to know that in you which was never born and does not age, the formless awareness present before every thought and every experience. This is the true source of strength, not the willpower of the ego but the quiet power of Being that abides in you.

When that presence is alive in you, you have overcome the wicked one, which is nothing other than unconsciousness itself, the egoic mind that generates fear and conflict. You do not defeat it by fighting it. You outgrow it, becoming so rooted in present awareness that the old fearful patterns can no longer take you over.

Live 1 John 2:14 today

  1. Before you touch your phone in the morning, sit on the edge of the bed and feel that you are here, awake, breathing. That quiet sense of being alive is older than anything on your screen.
  2. In a conversation where you feel the need to be right, let the other person finish and stay steady instead of arguing. The calm you keep is worth more than the point you make.
  3. When a stressful meeting or an angry email hits, feel your feet on the floor for one breath before you respond. Something in you is watching the stress and is not the stress.

When the day gets loud, is there anything in me that stays quiet underneath it?

You do not win against a noisy mind by wrestling it. You sit still until the noise loses interest.
