1 John 2:24 Meaning Therefore

Therefore, as for you, let that remain in you which you heard from the beginning. If that which you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son, and in the Father.

What does 1 John 2:24 mean?

Long before any thought or teaching, a person already knows something quiet and close, present from the first moment of being alive. That knowing is the plain sense of being here, underneath the whole story of who you are.

Ego v. Being

Long before any thought or teaching, a person already knows something quiet and close, present from the first moment of being alive. That knowing is the plain sense of being here, underneath the whole story of who you are. When it is let alone, it stays. Buried under the noise of the mind, it goes quiet but never dies.

What abides from the beginning is not a set of beliefs to defend but the still awareness that was there before any belief arrived. When that awareness remains, a person will rest again in the source of their own being and in the life that flows from it, no longer cut off from either. Staying near it, they come home to what they always were.

  1. Somewhere in the day, sit without a screen for three minutes and do nothing. What is left when the input stops has been there the whole time.
  2. Spend a stretch with someone without explaining yourself or managing their impression of you. Just be present and let them meet whoever is actually here.
  3. In a tense moment at work, instead of reaching for a strategy, come back to the simple fact that you are here and breathing. That ground is steadier than any plan.

What was here in me before I learned who I was supposed to be?
