1 John 2:4 Meaning One Who Says

One who says, “I know him,” and doesn’t keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth isn’t in him.

What does 1 John 2:4 mean?

Knowing, in the mind's version, is merely holding the right concepts and beliefs. You can carry a thousand spiritual ideas and remain entirely asleep, because a belief is only a thought, and thought is not the living reality it points to.

Ego v. Being

Knowing, in the mind's version, is merely holding the right concepts and beliefs. You can carry a thousand spiritual ideas and remain entirely asleep, because a belief is only a thought, and thought is not the living reality it points to. The one who says I know him but lives from ego has knowledge without presence.

Real knowing shows itself in how you actually are, moment to moment. It becomes visible in patience, in kindness, in the absence of reactive violence. When the deeper truth is genuinely alive in someone, their conduct changes on its own. So the words prove nothing. Only a transformed way of being reveals whether the truth has taken root.

Live 1 John 2:4 today

  1. Spend part of today watching how you behave rather than what you think about yourself. Impatience in a grocery line tells you more than any book you have read.
  2. Pick one person you find hard and be a little kinder to them today than your mood suggests. Nothing announced, just a warmer tone in one message.
  3. Under pressure today, a deadline, a tense call, watch for the sharp edge coming into your voice. Catching it before it lands is worth more than any explanation of calm.

If someone watched my ordinary day without hearing a word from me, what would they say I actually believe?

Tao Te Ching 81

True words are not showy and showy words are not true. The real thing is quiet and visible in conduct.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus said a carpenter does not come to you talking about carpentry, he shows you a chair. Your behavior is the chair.

Zen

The old saying warns against mistaking the finger for the moon it points at. A pile of right ideas can leave a person entirely asleep.
