1 John 2:8 Meaning Again
Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away and the true light already shines.

1 John 2:8 · World English Bible
Again, I write a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away and the true light already shines.
Darkness here is not evil but unconsciousness, the state of being lost in thought and ruled by the ego and its endless wanting. The true light is consciousness itself, the simple awareness that you are.

EGO & BEING
Darkness here is not evil but unconsciousness, the state of being lost in thought and ruled by the ego and its endless wanting. The true light is consciousness itself, the simple awareness that you are. It does not arrive from somewhere else. It shines now, in this moment, the only place it ever shines.
Word, now. The light is not a future reward for good behavior. It is what you already are beneath the noise of the mind. The darkness passes the instant you become present, because presence and unconsciousness cannot occupy the same moment.

BUDDHISM
Avijjā: Ignorance
Ignorance is the mind's failure to see what is in front of it. Darkness of this kind carries no substance of its own, the way a room at night holds nothing extra, only a lamp that is out; whoever gropes across it barks their shins on chairs that stood there all along. Hate the brother beside you and you are walking that room with your eyes covered, which is why such a person can never say where they are headed.
Anicca: Impermanence
Whatever is put together comes apart, darkness included. Passing away is in the present tense for good reason: this dark is not a wall waiting to be knocked down but weather already thinning, like fog burning off a field after sunrise. Nothing needs to be added for it to go, since the conditions that held it are running out on their own.
Pabhassara citta: The mind's natural brightness
Brightness belongs to the mind, and stains arrive as visitors. That is why the light is described as already shining rather than on its way: the shutters are coming off a window that faced the sun the whole time. One light showing through different amounts of grime is how the same thing can be true in him and true in you at once.
Vijjā: Clear knowing
Clear knowing is what stands where ignorance stood. Light and dark cannot share a room; strike a match and the darkness puts up no fight, it is simply finished. Calling the light true separates it from the secondhand kind, a report of someone else's lamp, which is worth nothing the moment you have to cross the floor yourself.
Mettā: Loving-kindness
Loving-kindness is the trained wish that others be well. Love one another can be called new though it is old as the hills, because it stops being a line on a page and starts happening in you, and a thing that has begun happening is new. Warmth toward the person in front of you is the light doing its work, and you can measure how far the dark has thinned by counting who in the room is still your enemy.
Ego v. Being lens
What am I postponing to a better day that is already available in this one?
Dogen taught that practice is not a path to awakening but awakening itself, happening now. There is nothing to wait for and nowhere else to arrive.
Ramana said you are already what you are seeking, and the search itself is the only thing in the way. Your own awareness of being is the thing, right now.
Without going anywhere you can know what matters, because what you are looking for was never elsewhere. The light is here or nowhere.
