1 John 4:15 Meaning Whoever Confesses That Jesus Is the Son

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.

What does 1 John 4:15 mean?

A confession made only with the mouth is like paint over rust: it hides the surface and changes nothing beneath. The heart's quiet disease is this split, saying one name while living another, so the words never reach the depth where a person actually stands.

SUFISM

Sufism

A confession made only with the mouth is like paint over rust: it hides the surface and changes nothing beneath. The heart's quiet disease is this split, saying one name while living another, so the words never reach the depth where a person actually stands.

The practice is to let the confession sink until it governs the small choices, until the tongue and the buried life say the same thing. Then the promise opens gently. God dwelling in the one who confesses, and that one dwelling in God, are not two rooms but one closeness, water and cup sharing a single color.

Live 1 John 4:15 today

  1. Pick one small choice today, what you watch, how you spend an hour, whether you tell the truth about a mistake, and let what you claim to believe decide it.
  2. Say to one person the thing you have only been saying to yourself. Let someone who knows you hear what you actually stand for.
  3. When a moment comes where being honest will cost you something at work or at home, be honest anyway. That is where the words stop being paint.

Where do my words and my days still say two different things?

The same truth in other traditions

Analects · Confucius

Confucius had no patience for a person whose words outran their conduct, and he measured sincerity by whether the two lined up over time. A fine phrase repeated often is still only a phrase.

Zen

Talking about water will not wet your mouth. A name said aloud is worth nothing until it has reached the way you actually live.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not explain your philosophy, he said, embody it. Sheep do not bring the shepherd grass to show how much they have eaten; they show it in wool and milk.
