1 John 4:17 · World English Bible
In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so we are in this world.
Love reaches its full growth when a person no longer braces for the verdict. Fear runs the mind like a courtroom, replaying old failures, waiting for the sentence.

CYBERNETICS
Love reaches its full growth when a person no longer braces for the verdict. Fear runs the mind like a courtroom, replaying old failures, waiting for the sentence. That dread drains away when the self-image stops being the accused and starts matching the pattern it was made from. A man who knows he already carries that likeness walks into the hard hour without flinching.
The promise is plain: what he is, you are meant to become here, not somewhere later. The mind steadies once it stops rehearsing punishment and holds the finished image instead. Boldness is what remains when the courtroom empties.

SUFISM
Maḥabba: Love Maḥabba names the bond with God that keeps growing until it runs everything a person does. Someone who only keeps the rules and hopes the ledger balances carries a quiet worry about how it will end. As love grows, that worry loses its footing, because the one who is loved is also the one who does the reckoning.
If I worship You in fear of hell, burn me in it: love with no bargain behind it Rabia prayed this, and it marks the place where love has grown up. Fear of punishment and hope of reward carry a person far, but a heart running on them keeps one eye on its own safety. That split attention is where dread comes from, and it thins out once the loving itself has become the point.
Takhalluq bi-akhlāq Allāh: Taking on God's own qualities Al-Ghazali writes about a person taking on God's qualities as far as a human can hold them: mercy, patience, generosity, forgiveness. These have to land in ordinary places, in how someone treats the person standing in front of them today. When mercy has become a person's own habit, meeting a merciful God no longer feels like meeting a stranger.
Uns: Being at ease in God's company Uns names the ease that settles in once awe has been lived with long enough. Early on, thinking about God can tighten a person up, the way you brace before a hard meeting. After years of turning back to the same presence, the bracing gives out. In its place comes the ease you feel with someone who has known you at your worst and stayed.
I am as my servant thinks I am: God meets a person as they expect The Prophet reported God saying this, and teachers return to it when fear of the end takes over. Someone who pictures God as mostly waiting to catch them out lives cramped, and reads every hard thing as evidence against themselves. Someone who has been loved and knows it expects to be met kindly, and that expectation shapes how they carry themselves right now.

Whose verdict am I still waiting for, when I was never actually on trial?
You suffer less from events than from the trial you keep holding about them in your head. Drop the verdict and the dread goes with it.
A student who stops trying to earn his own nature discovers he already had it. There is nothing to prove to the one who was never your judge.
Stop knocking on the door as a beggar, you were welcomed in long ago. Love ends the audition you thought you were still in.
