1 John 4:7 Meaning Beloved

Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God.

What does 1 John 4:7 mean?

Love is not a feeling people manufacture for each other. It comes from outside them, from God, flowing through them the way heat passes through iron set in a fire.

Love is not a feeling people manufacture for each other. It comes from outside them, from God, flowing through them the way heat passes through iron set in a fire. That is why loving another person is evidence of a real change already worked in someone, a second birth that makes them capable of what was beyond them before.

Knowing God works differently than knowing facts. A person can study theology for years and stay a stranger to Him, while someone who genuinely gives themselves away to a neighbor has already begun to share God's own life. The love shown to a difficult relative or a tiring friend is the actual meeting place, and there is no way around it into some purer knowledge.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Mettā: Loving-kindness Mettā is goodwill trained until it holds steady toward everyone. "Love one another," addressed to a congregation that has just watched some of its members walk out, is a practice that widens: mettā keeps going past the people still in the room. Its measure is the care a mother gives her only child, stretched to cover strangers, and the opening word, Beloved, already places these readers inside that care.

Kalyāṇamittatā: Good friendship Kalyāṇamittatā is companionship that carries the practice forward. "One another" is mutual and plural: this love moves between people, and each becomes the condition for the next one's growth. Ānanda once guessed that such friendship was half the holy life, and was told it is the whole of it.

Brahmavihāra: Divine abiding The brahmavihāras are four boundless states, named for where the one who lives in them dwells. "Love is of God" says the same thing from the source end: the warmth arrives from beyond the person feeling it, and pours through rather than out. Whoever spreads goodwill in all directions without limit is said to be living in Brahmā's own house while still walking around on earth.

Dhammaja: Born of the Dhamma Dhammaja is the second birth the Buddha claimed for his close disciples, born of the Dhamma, heirs to it. "Everyone who loves has been born of God" makes love the evidence of that parentage, a family resemblance, the way a child carries a parent's face. Nobody asks to see the birth certificate; they watch how you treat the person next to you.

Sandiṭṭhika: Visible here and now Sandiṭṭhika is the mark of the Dhamma as something each person sees firsthand. "Knows God" comes after loving because the knowing arrives through the doing, the way you learn what warmth is by standing near the fire. Anyone in that divided house could recite the doctrine correctly; the one who loves has tasted it, and that taste is the knowledge meant.

SUFISM

Sufism

A stream cannot give what its spring does not send down. When a person loves, the love is not manufactured in him; it is passed along from its source, so to love at all is to carry something of God's own current. What blocks the channel is the cold turn inward, the envy and grudge that dam the flow. The cure is one small generous act toward the person nearest.

So knowing God is not first a matter of ideas. The one who loves already knows Him, for loving is the spring recognizing its own water.

Live 1 John 4:7 today

  1. Pick the hardest name in your phone and call or message them today without being asked. Let the warmth be real even if you have to start it from nothing.
  2. At dinner or on the commute home, give the tiring person your actual attention, phone face down, for as long as they need. Let that be the place you meet God rather than something you do before it.
  3. When someone is difficult in a meeting or in traffic, drop the private commentary running in your head about them. Replace it with one honest thing you can want for their good.

Am I waiting to understand love before I let it pass through me?

Sufism · Rumi

The lover is not the source of love; the love moves through and leaves the person changed. Iron does not make the heat it glows with.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The self in you is the same self in the one across from you, and whoever sees that can no longer harm or despise them. This knowing is not information; it arrives through how you treat people.

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

He laughs at the scholars who can argue beautifully about the Way and cannot live an hour of it. The one who simply acts with kindness has already entered what the other is still describing.
