Saddhā: Confidence Confidence is trust in a teacher, proved by walking the path. Loving God gets hands and feet here: an elder writing to a congregation just torn open by people who walked out refuses to let love stay a feeling, and measures it instead by what is kept.

BUDDHISM
Saddhā: Confidence Confidence is trust in a teacher, proved by walking the path. Loving God gets hands and feet here: an elder writing to a congregation just torn open by people who walked out refuses to let love stay a feeling, and measures it instead by what is kept. A child trusts a parent by doing what is asked, and the doing is where the trust becomes visible to everyone, including the child.
Sikkhāpada: Training rule A training rule is one item of practice a person takes up. Heard as training, each commandment becomes a place where love gets specific: this money, this tongue, this neighbor at this hour, which is far more workable than love in general. Musicians do not resent scales, because scales are how the music becomes possible.
Sīla: Virtue Virtue is conduct kept whole in body and speech. Keeping carries the sense of guarding, the way you keep a fence in repair: attention given daily, in small amounts, long before anything falls down. Throughout this letter the commandments come down to loving the brother or sister in the same room, so the guarding happens in ordinary exchanges, in who gets greeted, who gets helped, and what gets left unsaid.
Avippaṭisāra: Freedom from remorse Freedom from remorse is the ease of someone with nothing to hide. Commandments prove light because of what they spare you: the sleepless replay at two in the morning, the story you have to keep straight, the neighbor you cross the street to avoid. Weight was never in the rule; it was in the wreckage the rule keeps you out of.
Pāmojja: Gladness Gladness is the lift that follows blameless conduct. The load comes off in a definite direction: each commandment kept makes the next one easier, so a life of them lightens as it goes rather than piling up, and the practice begins to feed itself. Anyone who has paid off a long debt knows how different the walk home feels.
Buddhism lens
Which rule I think of as a burden is actually keeping me out of a mess?
One good act pulls the next one along behind it, and one failure makes the following failure easier. The reward of doing right is that doing right gets simpler.
The person who acts because the action is right, without bargaining for the outcome, carries nothing afterward. Duty done cleanly leaves no residue to drag around.
Freedom comes from training in small specific things, not from grand declarations about virtue. Practice the rule on the little matter in front of you, and the rule stops feeling like a weight.
