1 Kings 14:6 Meaning So When Ahijah Heard the Sound

So when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, he said, “Come in, Jeroboam’s wife! Why do you pretend to be another? For I am sent to you with heavy news.

What does 1 Kings 14:6 mean?

Why do you pretend to be someone you are not? The disguise you wear was made by the mind, a role assembled from fears and wants, and you have worn it so long you mistake it for your face.

Ego v. Being

Why do you pretend to be someone you are not? The disguise you wear was made by the mind, a role assembled from fears and wants, and you have worn it so long you mistake it for your face. Yet presence sees straight through it, as the prophet knew the wife of Jeroboam the instant she stepped through the door.

You cannot hide what you are behind a costume of thought. The heavy tidings are simply this: the false self must fall. When you stop feigning to be another and rest as the awareness you already are, the exhausting work of pretending comes to an end.

  1. Pick one place online where you polish yourself a little, a profile, a caption, a reply you rewrote four times. Post the plain version, or post nothing, and sit with how that feels.
  2. With one person today, say the ordinary true thing instead of the smoother one. Tired instead of great, I do not know instead of a confident guess.
  3. When you are in a work conversation and feel yourself slipping into the voice you think they want, pause for one breath and keep talking in your own. Nothing bad happens, and you get the afternoon's energy back.

Where are you still spending energy keeping up a version of yourself nobody actually asked for?

Zen

The teaching asks for your original face, the one that existed before any role was handed to you. Every mask you present, however well made, is later than what is wearing it.

Sufism · Rumi

The heart is a mirror, and the work is polishing off the rust rather than painting something new on the glass. What was always there shows the moment the covering goes.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Nothing is more shameful than insincerity, and the man who announces how straightforward he is has already given himself away. Be one person plainly instead of presenting one.
