1 Kings 18:26 Meaning They Took the Bull Which Was Given

They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.

Effort inside a method that cannot work is the most convincing way a person avoids changing the method.

Intensity is the easiest link on the chain to change, which is why it is the first one people reach for when nothing comes back. The belief that this altar answers sets the state, the state delivers urgency, urgency drives more volume and more motion, and half a day of it compounds into nothing but proof that more was tried.

Sincerity was never the variable. The silence was not a verdict on their commitment. A person can spend years at maximum effort inside a method that was never going to answer, and the cost is the years, while the belief that spent them comes through untouched.

Live 1 Kings 18:26 today

  1. Look at the one thing you have been trying harder at for over a year with nothing to show. Instead of adding hours this week, write down honestly what you have never once questioned about how you are doing it.
  2. Ask one person who knows the work well to tell you what they think is not working. Then say nothing back except thank you, and sit with it for a day before you defend anything.
  3. In the meeting where the plan is clearly failing and everyone is volunteering more hours, be the one who asks whether the plan itself is the problem. Say it kindly, and say it anyway.

Where have you mistaken how hard you are trying for evidence that you are on the right road?

Zen

A man who polishes a brick all his life will never hold a mirror. More effort on the wrong material is still the wrong material.

Tao Te Ching 30

Force is followed by loss of strength. What strains against the way of things wears out the one straining, not the obstacle.

Buddhism · Right effort

Effort only counts as right effort when it is pointed the right way. Energy alone is not virtue, and sincerity does not make a dead end into a road.
