Anyone who keeps a way out has already decided what they will do when it gets hard. Deliberately raising the cost of being wrong is how a person shuts down their own future negotiation.

SELF-HELP
Anyone who keeps a way out has already decided what they will do when it gets hard.
Deliberately raising the cost of being wrong is how a person shuts down their own future negotiation. The third drenching removes every excuse still available afterward: soaked wood leaves no room to call fire an accident, and no room to quietly walk back a claim made about Yahweh in front of a watching nation. Setting the stakes that high fixes the state, and a fixed state asks for what it needs without hedging.
Most people negotiate in the other direction, preserving just enough deniability to survive being wrong, and they end up with commitments that never once required anything of them.
Self-Help lens
What have you kept just vague enough that nobody could ever hold you to it?
When a man does not know which harbour he is making for, no wind is the right wind. Choosing one destination is what makes any effort count.
Sit down as though you will not get up. The posture that leaves no exit is what makes the sitting real.
Resolve without reservation is the only resolve that holds. A vow kept half aside is already broken in the place it was held back.
