EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Two words carry the whole moment. I am. Before any role, before the errand and the message to be delivered, a bare sense of being present holds steady underneath, the awareness that says simply, here.

Elijah does not hide and does not inflate himself. He stands in plain presence and lets it be known that he is here, now, undivided. Beneath every name a person answers to, this same knowing waits. When the roles and titles fall quiet, what remains is that steady I am, present and awake, needing nothing added to be complete.

Live 1 Kings 18:8 today

  1. When your name comes up in a notification or an email today, answer from where you actually are instead of from the slightly larger or smaller version of yourself. Just here, nothing performed.
  2. Next time a friend or family member calls you, put down whatever is in your other hand before you say hello. Be entirely in that one conversation for its first thirty seconds.
  3. In a tense moment at work, when you are asked whether you handled something, say the plain yes or no without padding it with defenses. The steadiness underneath will hold you better than the explanation.

What would change if you stopped shrinking and stopped inflating, and simply let yourself be here?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

A monk answers his teacher's call with a simple yes, present and with nothing held back. The whole of being awake can fit inside one unhidden response.

Upanishads

Under every role and every name, the teachers point to one awareness that says only, I am. Nothing needs to be added to it for it to be complete.

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not puff himself up has room to be seen clearly. Standing plainly where you are carries more weight than any display.
