The answer to a man who wants to die is work that belongs to somebody else's future.

Despair sustains itself by rehearsal. The same review runs on a loop, the loop sets the state, the state returns the verdict that everything is finished, and a finished man acts on nothing, which frees up more time to rehearse.

Breaking that loop takes an assignment, not consolation. What he is handed is other people's futures, including a successor who will outlast him. Raising someone past yourself is the one contribution impossible to perform while nursing your own ending, and three names to find is three places his attention now has to be, none of them the desert he asked to die in. What the errand costs him is the story that he was the only one left.

Live 1 Kings 19:16 today

  1. Write down the names of two or three people whose growth you could actually help, then pick one and send the message today. Replace the rehearsal with a list.
  2. Teach someone younger or newer one thing you know well, in a ten minute call or over coffee. Being outlasted by what you pass on is the point, not the loss.
  3. When your mind starts the same old review at your desk, open a message instead and ask a colleague what they are stuck on. Attention moved to another person stops funding the loop.

If three people's futures depended on you this week, which name would you be slowest to say out loud?

He wrote that teaching a student lifted him out of his own low state, because handing on what you know means you are no longer the subject of the story.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Raise up many students: the measure of a life is the people who carry it forward, not what you finished yourself.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 7

The sage lasts because he does not live for himself; putting others ahead is what quietly secures him.
