Money buys back a slave, but it cannot reach the thing people are actually enslaved to. Habits absorbed from family and culture, the patterns of behaving that no one chose and everyone inherited, run deeper than any price could reach.

ORTHODOX
Money buys back a slave, but it cannot reach the thing people are actually enslaved to. Habits absorbed from family and culture, the patterns of behaving that no one chose and everyone inherited, run deeper than any price could reach. Freedom from that had to cost something that does not rot, and only the blood of God made man is of that order.
Inheritance is not automatically good. A way of living can be handed down for generations and still be empty, and part of following Christ is having the courage to break a chain that one's own parents were caught in. What is received from the Church is different in kind, because it comes not from custom hardening over time but from God stepping into history.

BUDDHISM
Paramparā: Handed down in succession Age is the only credential an inherited custom carries, and it is not much of one. The fathers received it from their fathers, and each generation kept it for the same reason: it was already there when they arrived. Test it the way the Kalamas were told to test what had been handed to them, by watching where the living of it leads.
Sīlabbata-parāmāsa: Grasping at rites and observances One of the fetters that keeps a person bound. The old way had its own currency, and it was never silver: it was the festival kept, the offering laid down, the custom performed exactly as the fathers performed it, all of it trusted to make a person clean. Greed and ill will sit underneath untouched by any of that, so a lifetime of careful observance can add up to nothing.
Asāra: Without heartwood Pithless, like the bark and twigs a man carries home believing he has the heartwood. The fathers passed on what they took to be the solid core of a life, and their sons carried it with the same confidence, which is how something worthless survives for generations. That habit of misjudging follows a person into the new life too, wherever silver and gold are still weighed as though they were the core of things.
Anicca: Impermanence Silver tarnishes, gold is stolen, and coin leaves the hand that counted it. Money of that kind buys a field or a captive's release for as long as the arrangement stands, and no longer. A ransom meant to hold forever cannot be made of the same stuff that is already passing away while it is being weighed out.
Vimutti: Release The mind coming free at the point where its grip opens. Redemption pictures a price paid and a captive walking out the gate, and the prison is a manner of living that came by inheritance rather than by choice. That gate opens from the inside, the moment the old way stops being trusted, and knowing you have already walked through is part of what keeps you out of it.

What was handed to me that I have never once questioned?
The teaching distinguishes the pain that comes to you from the habit of reaction that was trained into you. The second one can be undone, but not by any amount of effort to look fine.
He warns that most of us live by opinions we never examined, handed down the way furniture is. A life given to you is not the same as a life chosen.
If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him. Even the most revered thing you inherited becomes a cage the moment you lean on it instead of seeing for yourself.
