EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To be born again is not to adopt a new belief or join a new group. It is an awakening in which you discover that what you essentially are was never born and can never die. Your first birth gave you a form, a perishable seed that grows, ages, and returns to dust.

But there is something in you that did not come from that seed. It is the timeless awareness, the living presence that abides when every form has passed away. When you awaken to this, you are born of the incorruptible, and you know yourself no longer as the fragile body but as the deathless consciousness that was always alive beneath it.

The second birth is the awakening of the higher self out of the ordinary self, a rising within the same body rather than an event after death. Corruptible seed is generation through the flesh, the physical origin that decays; the incorruptible seed is the deathless spark of consciousness that fathers the new man from within.

The living word is the creative intelligence at the root of a person, the sound and reason that does not perish because it belongs to spirit and not to the body. From that abiding word the inner self is conceived anew, born once by flesh and now a second time by the imperishable life already carried inside.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Bīja: Seed Consciousness and kamma work as seed in the early images, planted in a field, watered, sprouting. Every grain in the sack already holds the next crop, so the stock settles the harvest long before anything is put in the ground. Sowing from perishable stock returns perishable grain, and the sowing repeats season after season.

Punabbhava: Renewed becoming Renewed becoming is the further existence that craving pushes into being. Born again, in the ordinary sense, means one more turn of the same wheel: a body that ages, a name that fades, then the same seed dropped in the same furrow. A second birth worth the name has to break the round rather than add another lap to it.

Anicca: Impermanence Impermanence is the mark on everything made of parts. Corruptible is the plain fact about such things: seed rots in the barn, grass withers, the flower falls, which is exactly the picture Peter reaches for a line later. Any birth drawn from that stock inherits the same clock.

Amata: The Deathless The deathless is the element never assembled and so never coming apart. Incorruptible seed is possible only where decay has nothing to work on, and the early texts point to one such place, the unborn and undying. Growth from that stock carries no rot in it, since there is no seam for rot to enter.

Dhammaja: Born of the Dhamma Born of the Dhamma is what the Buddha called students the teaching had remade, heirs of it by hearing. Birth through a word stands on the same footing, where family line counts for nothing and what reached the ear and took hold counts for everything. Peter's scattered readers, far from home and stripped of local standing, receive a lineage that travels with them.

Akāliko: Not delayed by time Akāliko belongs to the standard description of the Dhamma: it never goes stale and never keeps you waiting. A word that lives and remains forever works this way, as potent for someone in a far province generations later as in the mouth that first spoke it. An accurate account of how things are does not expire the way news does, which is why it can serve as seed at all.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Being born once is biological; the second birth happens in awareness. The seed that rots is the personality assembled out of memory, borrowed opinion, the whole mechanical continuity that calls itself you and dies with the body. The seed that does not rot was never planted by anyone. It is the watching that is already here, untouched by everything it watches.

The word that lives forever is not sentences carried in the head. Scripture memorized is still corruptible seed, someone else's harvest stored in your barn. What remains is the wordless intelligence that hears, and a man discovers it the moment his own chatter falls silent and something goes on being awake without him.

Live 1 Peter 1:23 today

  1. Take a minute today to feel the plain fact that you are here and aware, before any detail about your life gets added. That awareness is the oldest thing you own.
  2. Ask someone older than you what has stayed the same in them since they were young. The answer usually points past the resume and the body.
  3. When you feel threatened by something small, a bad review, an unanswered text, a wrinkle, ask what in you is actually at risk. Often it is only the image, not you.

What in me has not changed since I was a child, under all the things that have?

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 2

What you truly are was never born and does not die. Bodies are like clothes, worn for a while and then set aside.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Birth and death are two faces of one turning, like day becoming night. Fear comes from taking the passing form to be the whole of you.

Zen

Asked what your face looked like before your parents met, you have nothing to say, and that silence is the answer. Something in you is older than your story.
