Psychoanalysis

Most people carry a hidden self they would rather not face. They build a mask for the world, and the gap between it and what lies beneath leaks out as deceit.

A figure in whom no deceit is found has no such gap. What he feels and what he says are the same thing, because nothing in him has been pushed into the dark. That is what wholeness looks like: a person so undivided that his words carry all of him, with nothing held back. Such an image draws people because it shows the unity they have lost in themselves.

  1. Reread one message before you send it today and cut the part that was performance. Say the plain thing instead.
  2. With one person you trust, answer how are you with the actual answer. Not a complaint, just the truth.
  3. In a meeting where you are tempted to agree with something you do not believe, stay quiet rather than nod along. Silence is honest, and a nod is not.

Where is the gap today between what you feel and what you let yourself say?

The true person has no gap between the inside and the outside. Nothing is held in reserve, so nothing leaks out sideways.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Let your face match what is actually in you. A life spent managing the impression is a life spent on something that was never you.

Zen

When you are hungry, eat. When you are tired, sleep. People marvel at this because they have made simple honesty into a feat.
