1 Peter 2:6 Meaning Because It Is Contained in Scripture

Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious: He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”

What does 1 Peter 2:6 mean?

A person cannot orient a life without a fixed point to orient it toward. The cornerstone is that point, the one value set highest and trusted, from which every lesser aim takes its angle.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A person cannot orient a life without a fixed point to orient it toward. The cornerstone is that point, the one value set highest and trusted, from which every lesser aim takes its angle. Choose it well and the whole structure of a life stands square. Choose nothing, and the walls wander until the building leans and fails.

To not be confounded is to be spared the bewilderment of the man who has no north. Confusion fills a life built on nothing settled. Whoever plants his weight on a foundation already proven under load moves through the world without that dizziness. Choose a stone that holds. Fix your highest aim on it, and the ground stops shifting beneath you.

Live 1 Peter 2:6 today

  1. Write down the one thing you will not trade away, in a single plain sentence, and put it where you will see it. Check your week against it rather than the other way around.
  2. The next time someone asks what matters to you, answer honestly instead of lightly. Saying it to another person makes it harder to drift from.
  3. When a day comes apart and you do not know which thing to pick up, go back to that sentence and choose from there. One fixed point is enough to stop the spinning.

What is my highest aim actually set on, judging by how I spent this week?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Decide first what kind of person you mean to be, then let everything else take its shape from that. Without the aim, each day pulls you wherever it likes.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Take refuge in something true and the fear loosens. Those who orient their lives toward the path walk steadily, while the unanchored are blown around by every mood.

Tao Te Ching 39

Everything that stands depends on something beneath it that does not move. Lose the foundation and the height you built becomes the danger.
