Murāqaba: Living aware that you are seen Sufis use this word for keeping watch, since you are always being watched. Someone who keeps doing right while it costs them starts to wonder whether anyone is counting. The sense that nothing gets missed steadies that person, because their record is kept whether or not anybody else is paying attention.

Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity Sincerity means acting for God alone. Someone treated unfairly for doing right feels a pull to perform their goodness louder, until other people finally admit it. Sincerity takes that pull away, since the one whose opinion counts has already seen the whole thing, and nothing is left to prove.

Call on Me and I will answer you: asking is never wasted The line comes from the Quran, and Sufis return to it constantly. Praying while nothing changes can feel like talking into an empty room, especially when the trouble comes from other people. The promise is that the asking lands, even when the reply is slow, so a person is heard long before anything visibly changes.

Tawakkul: Trusting God with the outcome Trust here means handing the result over to God. Being wronged sets off a hunger to even the score, or at least to see the other person exposed. Trust moves the accounting to someone who holds the whole record, so a person can set the case down and stop rehearsing it.

Jalāl and Jamāl: Majesty and beauty Sufis pair God's majesty with God's beauty, two aspects of one God. Someone set on harming others meets hardness, while someone turning toward God meets welcome, and God has not changed between the two. For a person on the receiving end of cruelty, the wrong they suffered is already answered, without them having to arrange it.

Live 1 Peter 3:12 today

  1. Do the right thing today in a place where it will go completely unrecorded. No post about it, no mention at dinner, no hint dropped at work.
  2. When someone takes credit for your work, let it stand for now and keep being useful to them. You can raise it later with a clear head, not in the sting of the moment.
  3. If you have been praying about something with nothing visibly moving, say it once more today and then go do the next ordinary task. The asking has already landed, even when the answer is slow.

Where are you quietly waiting to be noticed, and what would change if you stopped waiting?

Do the right action and let go of the result. The work is yours, the outcome is not, and clinging to the outcome is what exhausts you.
