1 Samuel 11:7 Meaning He Took a Yoke of Oxen

He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

What does 1 Samuel 11:7 mean?

People move when retreat costs more than advance, not when the cause is finally explained well enough. Weeping had already gone through those towns and produced nothing, because news does not move a nation and neither does outrage.

People move when retreat costs more than advance, not when the cause is finally explained well enough.

Weeping had already gone through those towns and produced nothing, because news does not move a nation and neither does outrage. What moved it was a leader spending his own livelihood first, in public, so the summons could not be filed as a suggestion.

The dread that fell was the dread of Yahweh, and dread in a body is energy; it came out as one motion in thousands of men before the day ended. The pattern transfers anywhere: remove the retreat, raise the standard where everyone can see the price of ignoring it, and the mobilizing takes care of itself. Keep the oxen, and the men of Jabesh die while everyone still feels terrible about it.

Live 1 Samuel 11:7 today

  1. Stop explaining the thing you keep meaning to start and pay a small real cost for it today, cancel the subscription, send the hard email, book the appointment. Something that cannot be unsent is what makes it true.
  2. If you want someone in your house or your group chat to take something seriously, go first and visibly. Let them see you give up the comfortable option before you ask them for anything.
  3. When a situation needs someone to move and everyone is still talking, be the one who makes the first irreversible step out loud, then say simply what you did and why.

Where am I still hoping a better explanation will do the work that only a cost will do?

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 66

The leader who puts himself last and spends himself first is the one people follow. Standing behind them in cost is what puts you ahead in their trust.

Stoicism · Seneca

People are moved by what they see a person do, not by how well he argues. Seneca says teach by paying the price in public and the lesson will not need explaining.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Do not say you will act when you are free, because the hour may never come. The decision gets made by making it, not by waiting until the case feels complete.
