1 Samuel 12:7 Meaning Now Therefore Stand Still

Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before Yahweh concerning all the righteous acts of Yahweh, which he did to you and to your fathers.

What does 1 Samuel 12:7 mean?

Stand still. The mind is always in motion, rushing toward the next thing, replaying what is gone, and in that ceaseless movement you cannot see what life has given you.

Ego v. Being

Stand still. The mind is always in motion, rushing toward the next thing, replaying what is gone, and in that ceaseless movement you cannot see what life has given you. Only when you grow still does the noise fall away and your life stands revealed before you.

Standing still is not idleness. It is the return to presence, the moment awareness stops chasing thought and rests in what is. Then you see clearly what the restless mind kept hidden, how much was already given to you and your fathers before you, and how little of it your own striving produced.

  1. Before bed, put the phone in another room and go back over your day for three minutes. Not to score it, just to see what was actually there.
  2. At dinner or on a walk, ask someone what the best part of their day was and really listen. You will both see the day differently for having said it out loud.
  3. In the middle of a loaded week, stop once and name three things already in your hands that you did not arrange yourself. Then go back to work.

What good in your life came to you without your doing?

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and you see things as they are. Everything comes and goes, and only the quiet center shows you the pattern.

Stoicism · Seneca

Each night he put the whole day before himself and went over it plainly, hiding nothing and excusing nothing. The looking itself is what keeps a life honest.

Zen

A still pond reflects the moon clearly. The same water, stirred, shows you nothing at all.
