1 Samuel 15:14 Meaning Samuel Said

Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”

What does 1 Samuel 15:14 mean?

The thing a person keeps back will always testify against the decision they claim to have made. Self-report is the weakest evidence a person has about their own commitment; the strongest is whatever they kept.

The thing a person keeps back will always testify against the decision they claim to have made.

Self-report is the weakest evidence a person has about their own commitment; the strongest is whatever they kept. Holding something back always rides on a belief, usually that the standard applies in spirit rather than in detail, and that belief builds a comfortable state, a comfortable state produces partial action, and partial action assembles a life that looks obedient while the exception grows louder every season.

Sincerity is never the test; the inventory is, and this inventory is audible. A man can mean every word he says and still be holding a preference dressed in a decision's clothes, and the exception he protects is the exact thing that costs him the position he was given.

Live 1 Samuel 15:14 today

  1. Take one thing you say you have given up and check what is still physically in your house, your phone, your calendar. The leftover is the honest answer about where you stand.
  2. If someone asks how a change is going, tell them the exception you kept rather than the summary you usually give. Saying the kept part out loud is what finally ends it.
  3. When you catch yourself arguing that the rule applies in spirit but not in this detail, take that as the signal, not the exemption. The detail you are defending is usually the whole thing.

What am I still keeping that speaks louder than what I say I decided?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not tell people what your principles are, show them in what you actually do. Your conduct is the only honest report on what you believe.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

A man can recite the teaching beautifully and live none of it, and then it does him no good. What he keeps doing, not what he says, is where he actually stands.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Fine words about the way are easy and worth little. The small thing a person quietly holds back shows where their practice really ends.
