Self-Help

Relief that comes from someone else's hands has to be bought again tomorrow, because nothing inside the man changed.

State can be moved from outside a person. Sound enters the body, breath slows to meet it, the grip loosens, and attention comes off the dread it had been circling. What departs, departs because God governs spirits; the strings gained authority over nothing. The music made him reachable.

A changed state is an opening, and Saul never used his to decide anything. He is well, and the torment comes back, over and over, because another man worked the levers for him and he never took hold of them himself. Whoever rents his state from someone else's hands pays again for every good hour and owns none of them.

Live 1 Samuel 16:23 today

  1. When something lifts your mood today, music in the kitchen, a show, a walk, use the good twenty minutes to decide one thing you have been avoiding. Spend the lift instead of just enjoying it.
  2. Be the harp for someone once today, a call, a meal, a ride, without expecting it to fix them. And when someone is that for you, say what you plan to do with the calm they just gave you.
  3. In the next spike of dread, before you reach for the phone, change your body first. Stand up, walk outside, slow your breathing down for two minutes, and see that you can move the dial yourself.

What do I reach for to feel better, and what have I ever done with the hour after it works?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

No one saves us but ourselves. Others can point the way, but the walking is not transferable.

Stoicism · Seneca

In his letters he says the wise man is self sufficient, because the good he lives on is carried inside him. Whatever another person hands you, that person can also take back.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind is a friend to the one who has mastered it and an enemy to everyone else. Relief that arrives from outside leaves the mind exactly as untrained as it found it.
