1 Samuel 16:5 Meaning He Said

He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

What does 1 Samuel 16:5 mean?

Before a man can be lifted toward what he might become, he has to be set apart from ordinary distraction and turned deliberately toward the highest thing. Samuel calls it sacrifice, and sanctifying the household means readying each person to stand before something that judges.

Before a man can be lifted toward what he might become, he has to be set apart from ordinary distraction and turned deliberately toward the highest thing. Samuel calls it sacrifice, and sanctifying the household means readying each person to stand before something that judges. The unlikely son is still out in the field. What matters most often waits where no one is looking.

To sanctify yourself is to clear away the trivial and orient upward, and the ritual gathers the family into that shared attention. The whole point of the coming ceremony is to see rightly, past appearance, past the obvious firstborn candidates, to the one who carries the future. Preparation precedes revelation. A man makes himself fit to receive before he learns what he is being prepared to receive.

Live 1 Samuel 16:5 today

  1. Before the thing that matters today, the conversation, the sit down, the moment you have been dreading, take five minutes with your phone in another room and nothing in your hands. Arrive already settled instead of settling while you talk.
  2. At dinner or in the car, put the screens away first and then start the conversation. People say different things when the table has been cleared of distractions, and you cannot get those things any other way.
  3. When the day is already loud and the next call is in two minutes, close the twelve tabs and take three slow breaths before you join. You cannot see anything clearly through that much noise, and the noise is the part you can actually remove.

What would you have to clear away to be able to see what is actually in front of you today?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · zazen

You sit down and settle before anything is understood. The clearing comes first, and whatever is seen is seen because the room was made ready.

Judaism · preparing for the Sabbath

The day itself is not the work. The sweeping, the cooking, the putting away of ordinary business is what makes a space the day can actually enter.

Bhagavad Gita 6

Steady the mind before you ask it to see. A lamp set out of the wind burns clear, and only then does it show you the room.
