ESOTERIC
The giant is the swollen power of the flesh, the ego grown huge and armored, stepping out of the lower nature to challenge the inner man. His name carries exile, the self cast out of its true ground and towering over the field of the mind.
His measure gives him away. The number 6 is the number of man in the body, matter without the seventh that would crown it into spirit, and 6 cubits and a span is the flesh stretched to its limit yet still one span short of the sacred. However tall the animal self grows, it stays earthbound, a mountain of muscle that never reaches the spirit above it.
Goliath: the ego swollen to giant size, the animal self of the body armored and towering over the inner life Gath: the winepress, the lower nature that crushes and presses the man down into matter The number 6: the number of man and the flesh, matter lacking the 7th that would lift it into spirit

Lao Tzu says that what grows hard and towering is close to breaking, while the soft and yielding keeps living. The giant's size is its weakness, not its strength.
The Buddha says that conquering yourself is a greater victory than defeating thousands in battle. The real opponent never stood on the field.
Marcus reminds himself that fame, armor and reputation are smoke, and that the only real stature is in the character underneath. Outward size proves nothing about what a person is.
