2 states of consciousness are shown warring in the one house of the body. Saul, whose name means asked-for or demanded, is the lower kingly self, the ego that was requested by the people and rules from the flesh, and the troubling spirit that seizes him is the turbulence that overtakes a mind still governed by its own grasping. David, whose name means beloved, is the rising heart-centered consciousness that plays upon the strings, drawing harmony out of the same instrument that torments the old king. The javelin held in Saul's hand is the fixed, hardened intention of the lower self, the pointed will turned against the very music that would heal it.
The spear in the hand is the whole tension. The failing ego, disturbed within its own house, clutches a weapon against the beloved awareness that only offers it order, because a self ruled by the flesh answers the approach of the higher heart not with welcome but with the impulse to strike it down.

David: the beloved, the rising heart-centered consciousness that draws harmony from the instrument
Javelin: the hardened, pointed will of the lower self, the fixed intention turned against the healing music
House: the body, the one dwelling in which the warring states of consciousness contend
