EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Who am I? Offered a place beside the throne, the young man does not reach for it. He turns instead to the honest question that dissolves every inflated self-image. What is my life, what is my family name, that I should be lifted so high?

This is not false modesty. It is the moment attention drops beneath the role, beneath the family line, beneath the story the mind tells about your importance. When you ask who you are and refuse the flattering answer, the small self loses its grip, and what remains is simply the still awareness that was there before any name or rank was given to you.

Live 1 Samuel 18:18 today

  1. Write down how you usually introduce yourself, the job, the role, the family position. Then sit for a minute with the plain fact of being here, apart from all of it.
  2. When someone praises you today, take it in simply and say thank you, without talking yourself up or talking yourself down.
  3. When you are being handed status, a promotion, a title, a seat at the better table, pause before the excitement writes a whole new story about you. You are the same person you were this morning.

Who are you when nobody is watching and no title applies?

Hold the question who am I and refuse every answer that comes as a label. What is left when the labels fall away is what you are.
