EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Abide thou with me. There is an invitation here deeper than one man speaking to another. To abide is to stay, to remain, to stop wandering off into the anxious future the mind is forever building. Fear scatters you across time; presence gathers you here.

To stay is to remain in the presence that is your true life. There you are not promised a world without danger, yet you are held in something no danger can reach. That is the safeguard. Danger may still come, but the awareness that you truly are cannot be harmed by it, and so you no longer live in its grip.

Live 1 Samuel 22:23 today

  1. When your mind runs ahead into everything that could go wrong, put a hand on your chest and feel three breaths. You are here, not in next week.
  2. Sit with someone who is scared without trying to fix it. Your steadiness beside them says more than any reassurance.
  3. In a hard moment, bad news, a tense call, bumper to bumper traffic, let your feet feel the floor or the pedals. Stay where your body actually is until the panic loosens.

Where does your mind run off to when you are afraid, and what is it like to stay put instead?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and you find the root. There is a place in you that the turning world does not reach.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The mind that is calm within itself is a fortress. Nothing outside you can enter it unless you open the gate.

Buddhism · Satipatthana

The way out of fear is to come back to the breath and the body, here, now. Fear lives in the imagined future, and you are not there.
