1 Samuel 26:12 Meaning So David Took the Spear

So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head; and they went away: and no man saw it, or knew it, nor did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Yahweh had fallen on them.

What does 1 Samuel 26:12 mean?

A deep sleep had fallen upon them, and so what happened at their very heads they neither saw nor knew. This is not only the sleep of the body.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A deep sleep had fallen upon them, and so what happened at their very heads they neither saw nor knew. This is not only the sleep of the body. Most of a human life is lived in exactly this state, lost in thought, absent from the present, moving through events without ever truly being there for them.

To be unconscious is to be asleep with open eyes. Life comes close enough to touch you and you miss it, because you are somewhere else, inside the endless commentary of the mind. Waking simply means becoming present enough to notice what is actually here, which is the one thing the sleeping never do.

Live 1 Samuel 26:12 today

  1. On your commute today, put the podcast and the scrolling away for ten minutes and just let the trees, buildings, and faces land on you. Nothing to figure out, only being there for the ride.
  2. The next time someone close to you talks, put your phone in another room and actually look at them. Half of being a good friend is being in the room.
  3. At one meal today, let the first three bites have your whole attention, no screen, no scroll, no second task. You will likely taste something you had stopped tasting.

What has been happening right beside you while you were somewhere else?

A student asked for the whole teaching, and the master said, when you eat, eat, when you walk, walk. The practice is being where your body already is.

Train yourself to know the breath while breathing, the step while stepping. Most of life is missed only because attention was elsewhere.
