1 Samuel 27:1 Meaning David Said in His Heart

David said in his heart, “I will now perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel. So shall I escape out of his hand.”

What does 1 Samuel 27:1 mean?

Fear and faith are the same faculty, and whichever future a person is certain of is the one they start funding. Certainty about an unseen future is one instrument, and it works identically whichever way it faces.

Fear and faith are the same faculty, and whichever future a person is certain of is the one they start funding.

Certainty about an unseen future is one instrument, and it works identically whichever way it faces. A conviction repeated until it feels like information sets the state, the state releases the dread, the dread picks the road, and Saul moves him out of the country without lifting a spear.

He once counted an armored giant as already fallen, and here he counts himself as already dead, the same instrument at the same strength with the same absence of proof. Which means turning it requires no new evidence, since none built the dread either. Left pointed where it is, a person relocates an entire life to defend against something that has not happened.

  1. Write down the sentence you have been saying inside your head about how this ends, the one that feels like a fact. Then write what you actually know for certain. The gap is almost always most of it.
  2. Before you cancel a plan, quit a job, or pull back from a friendship, say the fear out loud to one person you trust and ask them whether they see it the way you do. Dread hates being spoken in a normal voice.
  3. When a dark certainty hits in traffic or in bed at one in the morning, hold it long enough to ask what you would do if the opposite were just as likely. There was no proof for the first one either.

What future am I already paying for, and who told me it was coming?

The mind is either your closest ally or your worst enemy, and nothing but your own training decides which. The same faculty makes both.

We suffer more in imagination than in reality, and we rehearse ruin long before any ruin arrives. Much of what we flee never came.
