1 Samuel 28:15 Meaning Samuel Said to Saul

Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?” Saul answered, “I am very distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, by prophets, or by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.”

What does 1 Samuel 28:15 mean?

A person who cannot bear silence will eventually buy counsel from anyone willing to sell it. Silence from God, taken as abandonment, is a belief before it is a fact, and that belief sets a state of dread that shrinks a man's horizon to the next twelve hours.

A person who cannot bear silence will eventually buy counsel from anyone willing to sell it.

Silence from God, taken as abandonment, is a belief before it is a fact, and that belief sets a state of dread that shrinks a man's horizon to the next twelve hours. Inside that horizon any answer looks like guidance, and certainty, the most basic need of the personality, will go shopping wherever it has to.

Direction was the whole request. Not pardon, not a restored connection, only something to do by morning, and that appetite is exactly what forbidden counsel exists to feed. The cost lands the same night, since hours that could have turned him back toward the God who had gone quiet go instead into extracting a verdict that changes nothing about the battle.

Live 1 Samuel 28:15 today

  1. When your mind is loud about something unresolved, give it ten minutes without reaching for your phone. No searching, no scrolling, no asking anyone. Just let the question sit there unanswered and see that you survive it.
  2. If you catch yourself texting three different people the same question today, stop after the first. You are not gathering wisdom, you are shopping for the reply that calms you, and the fourth person will only tell you what the first one did.
  3. Under real pressure at work, when a decision feels like it has to happen by tonight, ask whether the deadline is actually tonight or whether your nerves set it. Most twelve-hour emergencies are one week long and only feel like tonight.

What would you do differently today if you believed the quiet was not abandonment?

Tao Te Ching 16

Stillness is where clarity comes back. The one who can wait inside quiet sees things settle on their own, while the one who rushes to act stirs the water he was trying to see through.

Stoicism · Epictetus

When you crave an answer badly enough, you hand your judgment to whoever offers one. Wanting certainty more than truth is how a person gets led.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

From craving comes grief and from craving comes fear. Let go of the thing you must have and there is nothing left for the fear to stand on.
