1 Samuel 6:19 · World English Bible

1 Samuel 6:19 Meaning He Struck of the Men of Beth

He struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into Yahweh’s ark, he struck fifty thousand seventy of the men. Then the people mourned, because Yahweh had struck the people with a great slaughter.

What does 1 Samuel 6:19 mean?

Bethshemesh means house of the sun, the seat of light in the body, and the men there are the faculties that pried open the ark, the innermost sacred vessel of the self, without being prepared to bear what it holds. To look into the ark is to force the deep inner power with the curious surface mind rather than approach it purified, and the flesh cannot survive the direct current: the lower faculties are struck down.

The slaughter is inward, the collapse of the parts of a person that reached for the highest force from an unready, outward state, and the mourning that follows is the self's grief over what it lost by grasping the holy carelessly.

Bethshemesh: the house of the sun, the seat of light within the body where the inner radiance dwells. Ark: the innermost sacred vessel of the self, the deep container of divine power that the unready mind must not pry open.

Live 1 Samuel 6:19 today

  1. Leave one thing unsearched today. The diagnosis, the old message thread, the person's profile. Curiosity is not the same as being ready to hold what you find.
  2. Let someone keep something from you without pressing. If a friend says they are not ready to talk about it, be the person who can wait.
  3. When you are stressed and reaching for a quick shortcut into something deep, a hard conversation, a big decision at 11pm, give it until tomorrow. Readiness is most of the answer.

What am I trying to open before I am strong enough to carry what is inside?

The same truth in other traditions

Judaism · Talmudic tradition

The sages taught that the deepest mysteries are not opened to the unprepared, and they told of students who went in too early and did not come back whole. Readiness is part of the teaching, not an obstacle to it.

Zen

A Zen teacher gives the student the dishes and the floor for years before the deeper work. The delay is not a test of patience, it is what makes the person able to hold what comes.

Sufism · Sufi tradition

Sufis insist on walking the path with a guide, because the wine of nearness poured into a cracked cup breaks the cup. The hunger is honored, the shortcut is not.
